Protect Your Pet from Summer Heat

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor adventures with your pets, but rising temperatures can quickly become dangerous for our four-legged companions. At Mandarin Animal Hospital, we want every pet to stay safe, healthy, and comfortable throughout the hottest months of the year. As your trusted Jacksonville animal hospital, we’re sharing some essential tips to help you protect your furry family members from heat-related illnesses.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Unlike people, dogs and cats cannot efficiently cool themselves through sweating. Instead, they rely primarily on panting and limited sweat glands in their paw pads. When temperatures climb, pets can quickly overheat, leading to heat exhaustion or even life-threatening heatstroke.

Watch for symptoms such as:

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Bright red or pale gums
  • Weakness or lethargy
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Difficulty walking or collapsing
  • Disorientation or seizures

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact Dr. Mosley  right away. Prompt care from our team can make all the difference.

Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day

Schedule walks and outdoor playtime during the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Hot sidewalks, asphalt, and sand can burn your pet’s sensitive paw pads in just seconds.

A simple test is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Vehicle

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a parked car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes. On an 85-degree day, the interior of a vehicle can exceed 100 degrees very quickly, putting pets at serious risk for heatstroke.

Whenever possible, leave your pet comfortably at home if you need to run errands.

Keep Fresh Water Available

Hydration is one of the best defenses against overheating. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water both indoors and outdoors. Bring a portable water bowl whenever you’re traveling or spending time outside, and encourage frequent water breaks during walks or play sessions.

Provide Plenty of Shade

If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure they have access to a shaded area that remains cool throughout the day. Trees, covered patios, or well-ventilated shelters can help protect them from direct sunlight. Remember that shade moves as the sun changes position, so check throughout the day to ensure your pet remains protected.

Be Mindful of High-Risk Pets

Some pets are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses than others. Flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Persian cats, and Himalayan cats have more difficulty cooling themselves. Senior pets, puppies, kittens, overweight animals, and pets with heart or respiratory conditions also require extra precautions during hot weather.
