Pet Stress During the Holidays

The holidays are an exciting and busy time for many families. With all the added hustle and bustle it is easy to forget how all the activity and frivolity can impact your pets.

Holiday Parties and Guests

For some pets, the presence of strange people in their home can be a source of stress. To help your pet cope, make sure he/she has a safe, quiet place to retreat from the commotion. Also remind guests to be aware of your pet and not to feed your pet “people” food. Remember, even a normally friendly dog or cat may act differently around enthusiastic children and crowds.

Out of Town Escapes

If you plan on boarding your pet while you’re away, remember to make the necessary reservations or arrangements well in advance. Our boarding facility fills up quickly during the holidays and reliable pet sitters leave town. Planning for your pet should be one of the first items on your to do list when scheduling your vacation.

If you’re traveling with your pet, make sure you have an appropriate pet carrier. If flying, contact your airline to find out exactly what’s required with regard to pet carriers, vaccinations, and documentation. Don’t forget to pack a pet bed or blanket and a couple of toys so your pet has something familiar when you reach your destination.

Other Holiday Hazards

Whether at home or away, if you are celebrating the holidays with your pet, there are additional risks you need to be aware of. Check out (and feel free to share!) our graphic summarizing some of the most serious.
